Visualization: The Human Lens to Big Data
Undeniably, big data has changed the world of business and science. In order to turn this data into valuable insights, however, human analysts first have to understand and analyze it. Towards this goal, interactive data visualization offers tremendous opportunities as the "human lens” to see and understand big data. Effectively visualizing data, however, poses its own challenges and many things can go wrong.
In my talk, I will first discuss general principles and potential pitfalls when visualizing data. I will then dig deeper into the idea of closely integrating interactive visualization with algorithmic analysis techniques, also known as Visual Analytics. This integration allows to go beyond visualization as a mere presentation tool, and instead make it an integral and powerful component of the data exploration and analysis process. I will use a case study from a collaborative project with BMW to concretely illustrate these ideas.
